Kumbh Mela is more of like a grand festival – the time when a large population of believers [Devotees] meet at one place in the name of God. Or say a mass Hindu Pilgrimage of faith and trust in which the Hindu religion followers gather to bathe in the sacred River.

In the specific language or say traditionally there are four fairs that are widely well-recognized as the Kumbh Mela:

  • The Haridwar Kumbh Mela;
  • The Allahabad Kumbh Mela;
  • The Ujjain Simhastha;
  • The Nashik – Trimbakeshwar Simhastha

Four Types of Kumbh Melas

In total there are four types of Kumbh Melas that are held on a huge scale in the spiritual land of country India:

1. Maha Kumbh Mela

Periodically, the grand occasion of Maha Kumbh Mela comes in every 144 years or say after 12 Purna  Kumbh Melas.

2. Purna Kumbh Mela

This extensive fair takes place after every 12 years in the sacred land of Allahabad. Pilgrims from across the world make it possible to mark their presence and take bath in the Holy Sangam.

3. Ardh Kumbh Mela

The name itself expresses it really well; this fair is conducted after every six years.

4. Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela is organized at four spiritual cities of country India [Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain every 3 years].

Four Holy Cities Where Kumbh Mela Is Organized Are:

1. Haridwar | Holy City | Kumbh Mela

In accordance to the planets [When the sun stays in Aries and the Jupiter is in Aquarius throughout the time of Hindu month of Chaitra then the destination organizing Kumbh Mela is Haridwar].

2. Allahabad [Prayag] | Holy City | Kumbh Mela

In accordance to the planets [When the sun and moon reside in Capricorn and the Jupiter lies in the Aries in the Hindu Month of Magha then the destination organizing Kumbh Mela is Allahabad].

3. Nashik | Holy City | Kumbh Mela

In accordance with the planets [When the sun and Jupiter stays in Leo throughout the month of Bhadrapada then the greatest fair is organized in the ancient city of Nashik].

4. Ujjain | Holy City | Kumbh Mela

In accordance to the planets [when Jupiter resides for a while in Leo and the sun prefers to stay in Aries or say when Jupiter, the moon and the sun stays together in Libra in the month of Vaisakha then the festive of huge human’s gathering is conducted in the spiritual city of Ujjain.

Ritual bathing with dates:

The first bathing [1st Shahi Snan] is on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti -14/15 January 2019;

One can also take a dip in the Sangam on Paush Purnima – 21st January 2019;

Then comes the day, which holds a unique aspect [Mauni Amavasya] – the major Royal bath considered as the 2nd Shahi Snan: 05 February 2019;

Basant Panchami [the 3rd Shahi Snan] – 10th of February 2019;

Maghi Poornima – 19th February 2019

Maha Shivratri – 04th March 2019

04th of March is the last day of this huge and extensive Fair.

Rituals At Kumbh Mela

The prominent ritual to follow without fail is to allow your body and soul to get in contact with the Holy River [the event of Bathing in the Sacred River] with the pure heart.

The devotees settle a tent at the camping area – they wake up early morning chanting the names of various God and Goddesses – they leave with a pair of clothes in order to take a bath in the sacred river and then they go back to their tent and cook food with lesser means; a huge population of pilgrims gather at one place and sing various devotional songs – they dance in happiness and celebrate their past and make themselves ready to face the present. Some pilgrims also participate in various religious events such as Hawan etc.

Two time of the day is really fascinating – one can literally feel Goosebumps arising on their bodies [The early Morning Aarti and the Evening Aarti].

This fair is something, which introduces you to a whole new way of living life. The Sadhus living in the tents of the camp area shares n. number of instances related to the basics of life and they even exchange a longing conversation if you wish to listen to their life story.

A life without leisure and amenities is even nicer [you get to witness how simpler or tougher life can get].

Kumbh Mela Places

There are four major cities of India that are considered as the most spiritual spots:

1. Haridwar

It’s an ancient city holding higher significance situated in a wide space of the Northern state of Uttarakhand. This sacred city houses several bathing steps [holy Ghats].

2. Allahabad

This is the city, which is blessed with Triveni Sangam [the confluence of prominent Rivers – Ganges, Yamuna and the “invisible’ Saraswati]. Make your way to a city situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

3. Nashik

It’s an ancient Holy city situated in the state of Maharashtra – this enthralling city is best-known for its connections to the epic poem” Ramayana”.

4. Ujjain

Pay a visit to the ancient city that resides by the Kshipra River in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. Ujjain is dotted with numerous pilgrimage sites – Centuries-old [Mahakaleshwar Temple], the Bade Ganesh Temple etc.

Kumbh Mela Stay

There are numerous hotels, which are situated at a minor distance from the Triveni Sangam, however, tents are the most preferred option. As that is the only way to reach as early as possible to the major Ghats from where you take bath and follow the eminent rituals in the name of God. Pilgrims leave their homes with a bag full of clothes and another bag full of utensils and cooking ingredients.
