One of the grandest congregations of Hindus – Maha Kumbh Mela is one where the devotees dedicate all of their senses to spiritual enlightenment as this is one occasion when these devotees feel the closest to God. This is a trip where you would be witnessing this gathering of Maha Kumbh Mela at Ujjain at the banks of river Kshipra. Take a dip into the holy water and cleanse yourself from all the misdeeds of your life.
The history of Maha Kumbh dating back to the Puranas, mentions the story of Samudra Manthan. The Ksheer Saga, which translates as the ocean of milk, was churned with the help of Meru Mountain (used as a rod) and Vasuki, the serpent (used as rope to move the rod). Legend has it that because of this churning (Samudra Manthan), Amrit was produced which became instantly the bone of contention between the Devas (gods) and Asuras(devils). This fight was concluded within 12 days as the Gods won. It is said that during this fight, four drops of Amrit(nectar) fell on to the surface of earth, and hence the 4 places where every 12 years Maha Kumbh is organized.
As astronomy positions itself in accordance to the event of Samudra Manthan and the event of falling of nectar on earth, the Kumbh Is organized. The devotees take a dip into the water whose purity and divinity cleanses all the sins of the person and their ancestors. People pray and bathe here as the world’s largest pilgrimage event happens at a single place.
One of the holiest cities in India, also witnesses the grandeur of Maha Kumbh. Maha Kumbh in Ujjain Is considered very important as it’s the abode of Lord Shiva. It is said that during the Churning, along with Amrit, poison also came out and to contain that poison from spreading all over, Mahakal consumed the poison (halahal) and saved everyone.
